Today is World Vegan Day and I just wanted to give my thanks to all of you lovely people who have dedicated your lives to the cruelty free cause. I know the term ‘vegan’ doesn’t sit well with some, but that doesn’t take away from what you are doing – creating a fairer, more loving world for all.
Myself, I have been vegan since January 2013 so roughly about 10 months at this point. I have lived through the protein question, the iron question, several disapproving looks as I interrogate waiters, spending way too much time reading labels, dining out and going without dinner or being stuck with a green salad as my only meal choice – but you know, none of those things bother me in the slightest. I have not once been ‘tempted’ to reach for cheese or anything else people think they would ‘miss’ as a vegan.
I stand firm in my belief that animals shouldn’t be food. I have two very smart, loving dogs (my children) and I would never think to eat them. I know pigs are smarter than dogs and that pains me every day, knowing that there are intelligent, sentient beings stuck in horrid conditions for years on end. Walking through supermarket meat isles makes me physically ill. I have burst into tears a few of times, walking through that area of the shop and I wish I could rescue every single one of those imprisoned creatures enduring the horror of factory farming. Which is exactly why I feel the need to say THANKS to every one of you choosing not to eat animals or their excretions.
Your choice to respect life above all else is what gets me through the tough times. The times when I feel like an unimportant single unit I look online and on our Facebook page and there you all are. My friends and fellow passengers on the quest to freedom for all. Your comments, questions and conversations fill my heart with joy and hope, so thank you for being there and for leading by example.
Love to you all xx
